Chapter Fifteen

Kal and Ruiz regrouped in his stateroom immediately after the meeting in order to discuss what they would do next. They were waiting for Jones and Garcia to join them. Their plan was reliant on speed, getting off the station before Sato’s staff had time to realize what was going on.

“Well that worked out pretty well,” Kal said.

“Yeah,” Ruiz agreed, “now we just need to see who Gbeho assigns to this op. Depending on who it is, they may be a giant pain in the ass.”

At that moment, Garcia and Jones walked through the door. “Hope you weren’t talking about me, ma’am,” Jones announced with almost a smile on his face.

“I wasn’t, but it still applies.” Ruiz smiled.

“So, we have the green light. Garcia, can you confirm that the pilots are ready?” Kal asked.

Garcia had been grinning since he entered the door. He was the most eager member of their crew since he’d made the decision to join Kal and Ruiz’s plan, which Kal wholeheartedly appreciated.

“It would be my pleasure. We have thirty-nine ships prepped and ready to go—four scouts, with the remainder being civilian ships confiscated by the EDF. All have flight crews that have been briefed and understand the mission. The thirty-five civilian ships have all been given their objectives, and we feel like we can cover about a hundred planets if everything goes smoothly. They will scout out the area and will make contact with the locals, should the situation permit.”

“The four scouts will depart together to rendezvous with the Lagos, which is waiting for us about a light year from here. Once we rendezvous, we will each head to the space controlled by the other species who are known to have been attacked by the Ukhel. For each, we have identified the most likely secondary seat of government, so each team will start there.”

“I have three squads of infantry and one squad of Tac-I, all with battle suits, ready to rock.” Jones seamlessly picked up the narrative. “We will be providing cover for landing parties on the scout ships when needed.”

“Bergeron,” Ruiz said with a sneer now that they were no longer in the briefing room with Sato, “will be with us on the Oruc. The other scout ships at least have someone familiar with the alien cultures that they will be traveling to.”

“Sounds like we all know the plan. I want to make sure that everyone that is going understands not only the importance of this mission but the possible repercussions, even if we are successful. We are essentially co-opting some of the very limited resources that Humanity has left. There is a good chance that we could be branded as traitors should this not go to plan. Hell, even if it does go to plan.” Kal wasn’t sure what the reaction from Sato and his staff would be when they arrived back at Kapustin.

“Not like they were using these ships anyways,” Jones declared with a smile.

“The stakes are too high to sit around and wait for the Ukhel to find us.
